A nonprofit founded in 1992

BellXcel: New Name. Same Vision.

Dear friends,

I am excited to announce that BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) is now BellXcel!

Over the past quarter century, our nonprofit has evolved to meet the needs of those we serve, and so have our name and brand identity. Change is the only constant in our organization. Yet, our vision remains unwavering — for all children to excel.

This bold vision was crystallized in 1992 by a group of Latino and Black Harvard University graduates who were determined to address the disproportionate number of children from their communities falling behind. They founded a free afterschool tutoring program and witnessed first-hand the awesome power of expanded learning time.

We were first named the Bell Foundation in honor of Dr. Derek Albert Bell, a lawyer, professor, civil rights activist, and the first tenured African-American professor of law at Harvard Law School. Later, we became known as BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), which spoke to our life-changing impact beyond the classroom.

Today, we are BellXcel, a name still rooted in the core principles Dr. Bell espoused, yet one that speaks to innovation and technology in accelerating impact. Our new name underscores our vision and reminds us of the endless journey set forth over 25 years ago.

BellXcel’s new modular approach makes it easier than ever for school district and community partners to design and deliver new evidence-based summer and afterschool learning programs, or enhance existing ones. Our Summer, Afterschool, Professional Development, and Consulting solutions meet them where they are, and empower them to deliver year-round impact for their students and educators.

We hope you enjoy our new name, logo, and interactive website. This marks the newest chapter in our efforts to reach exponentially more children. What will be our next chapter?

Imagine the future for BellXcel.

Sincerely,
