DR. LAUREN GILBERT NAMED NEXT CEO OF BELL
Dr. Tiffany Gueye To Step Down Next Year After 18 Years With The Organization
BOSTON, Sept. 19, 2016 - Dr. Lauren Gilbert, the president and chief strategy officer of BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), will succeed Dr. Tiffany Gueye as the organization's chief executive officer next year, the Board of Directors announced today.
Gilbert, who joined BELL in 2011, currently is responsible for program design, staff professional development, program evaluation and national strategic partnerships. She was identified several years ago as an emerging leader through the organization's succession planning program, added Laurene Sperling, the chair of BELL's Board.
Gueye started her career at BELL in 1998 and rose through a series of positions of increasing responsibility to become the CEO in 2008. She has overseen a dramatic expansion of BELL's programs, including development of a partnership model with organizations such as the YMCA of the USA to significantly expand the availability of summer learning programs across the country.
Gueye will remain in her post for a transition period through the conclusion of BELL's current fiscal year next June. She will remain engaged with BELL as a director on its national governing board.
"We are so grateful for Tiffany's enormous contributions to the organization's success over such a long period of time, and now for her thoughtfulness in transitioning to her next phase of leadership in the social sector," said Sperling. "And in Lauren, we have another proven leader who can continue the critical work of this organization."
BELL is one of the nation's leading nonprofit providers of quality expanded learning programs for children in grades pre-K-8. Its mission is to transform the academic achievement, self-confidence and life trajectories of children living in low-income communities. BELL currently is serving nearly 15,000 students in public schools across the country through its summer and after-school programs and partnerships.
"BELL has an enormous role to play in this country in realizing our vision that all children excel," noted Gilbert, who holds a doctorate in education from Boston College. "As a Latina woman, it has been deeply rewarding to support the organization's success to date and it will be an honor to lead it through its next phase."
Gilbert came to BELL after working as a special education teacher in New Mexico and then in various leadership posts with school districts in Massachusetts. She has served as an adjunct professor at Simmons College, a consultant for Teachers 21 and as a member of the Department of Education's Program Quality Assurance team.
Gueye holds a BA degree in psychology and Ph.D. in educational research, evaluation and measurement from Boston College. She serves on the board of the Center for Effective Philanthropy; the knowledge advisory board for The Bridgespan Group; the Board of Overseers for the YMCA of Greater Boston, and the advisory board for Results for America. She is a recipient of Boston College's Donald J. White Teaching Excellence Award and served as an instructor at Johns Hopkins University.
"In serving more than 14,000 scholars just this past summer, BELL transformed the lives of more scholars than it ever has before," Gueye noted. "With compelling plans for its future in the making, and an amazing team in place, I feel privileged to have been on this journey and I have enormous confidence in BELL's pathway to transformative impact for the country."
"This is really a moment of strength for BELL," added Tony Battaglia, BELL's chief operating officer and president who has worked with Gueye for the past nine years. "Tiffany Gueye has built BELL's evidence base of rigorous studies, expanded the organization's reach to 28 states, secured significant investments and recruited a world class team. Our future with Lauren is incredibly bright."
BELL has the support of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, the New York Life Foundation, numerous private institutions and a talented executive management team. For more information about BELL, please visit www.experienceBELL.org.
