Nadia Clarke Promoted to Executive Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region


BALTIMORE - October 11, 2013 - BELL announced the promotion of Nadia Clarke, Director of Field Operations, to Executive Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region. In her new role, Nadia will focus on maximizing the impact and sustainability of BELL's programs in Baltimore while cultivating new partnerships in Maryland and surrounding states.

Nadia is one of BELL's most tenured leaders, having first joined BELL's team as a Site Manager in New York City in 2004. She led one of the city's largest BELL After School programs, and her scholars achieved some of the strongest outcomes in the country. She became Deputy Director, responsible for school partnerships and program operations at twelve schools in the Bronx. Nadia then moved to Baltimore to help establish BELL's first summer learning partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools in 2007, which succeeded in boosting the academic performance and self-confidence of 2,000 scholars.

Since leading BELL's first programs in Baltimore, Nadia has forged strong partnerships with Baltimore City Public Schools, the Family League, the University of Maryland, and donors throughout the region, including the Open Society Institute - Baltimore, the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, and the T. Rowe Price Foundation. She collaborated with the National Summer Learning Association to launch a three year Smarter Summers initiative aimed at expanding summer learning opportunities for middle school students, and with ExpandEd Schools by TASC to pilot a new expanded learning model during the school year.

Prior to BELL, Nadia served as a teacher, school counselor, and program director in New York City. She holds undergraduate and M.S.W. degrees from Florida International University.

What stands out about BELL that inspired you to join the organization?

I was inspired to join BELL years ago because of our rigor and our dedication to constantly assessing and improving our approach.

What are your hopes and dreams for BELL scholars?

I hope that scholars will embrace the beauty of the gift that lives in each of them. They will take those gifts and live a fulfilled life, positively impacting those around them.

What is the greatest challenge and opportunity facing BELL in Baltimore and the wider Mid-Atlantic region?

The extent of the need for more and better learning opportunities far outpaces the resources available to meet that need. But I am hopeful because Baltimore, in particular, has a well-developed strategy around wholesale change for students. Expanded learning is a key component of the strategy, and BELL's mission and work aligns well with the city's vision.

What are your hopes and dreams for BELL?

That we continue working in service of scholars until there is no more work to be done!
