Building Educated Leaders for Life (experiencebell.org) has worked for more than 20 years to improve the academic prospects of children living in low-income urban communities. More than 100 public schools in eight states have partnered with BELL to narrow the achievement gap by supplementing school hours with BELL's After School and Summer learning programs. Together, these programs now reach some 15,000 kids each year. Certified teachers lead small-group tutoring sessions that combine core skills like math and literacy with hands-on course work in arts and STEM subjects such as creative writing, drama, robotics, and digital music production. BELL programs also seek to inspire students to learn with educational field trips and motivational speakers.

Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group's highest rating.
