WGHP - FOX 8: Winston-Salem students take part in BELL summer learning program

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - July 12, 2013 - Over 1,600 students are taking part in the BELL summer learning program, a five-week course aimed at low-income youth who need assistance in certain subjects.

The students go on field trips, eat breakfast together and are given many hands-on opportunities.

Science, language and math are covered in the course, along with self-esteem.

"A lot of these children don't have the opportunity. So this is wonderful for them to continue their education and that gap that comes with summer is not there because they've been learning all summer long," a BELL teacher said.

Like a regular school year, a little testing will follow.

"At the beginning of the term [students] are given a pre-test and at the end of the program [students] are given a post test to see how well they've grown - students can grow several months even within the five month period."

They may also walk away with an unexpected lesson-self-esteem.

"They can feel so much better about themselves and learn more about who they are."
