As part of a community-wide effort prevent summer learning loss among their highest needs students, Montgomery County Public Schools partnered with BellXcel to launch a 4-year plan consisting of five-week annual summer programs in eight Title 1 elementary schools. Based on their own evaluation, and by comparing test results from the spring of 2016 to the fall of 2016, a clear pattern emerged: There was statistically significant evidence of positive impact.
Nearly 60 percent of Providence youth experience summer learning loss in reading, and nearly 50 percent in math. BellXcel and other nonprofit partners were called in to remedy this situation. Scholars who participated in BellXcel Summer in 2018 gained 2 months in literacy skills and 3 months in math skills – all in just 5 weeks. Due to the program's success, it has expended to serve 850 students.
Together with The Big Lift, we are transforming pre-k, kindergarten and 1st grade students into scholars. The holistic summer program blends literacy and STEM instruction with a focus on innovation, hands-on activities, technology and enrichment. Enrichment courses are designed to foster critical 21st century skills like teamwork and leadership, increase self-confidence, and expose scholars to new subjects, opportunities, and career paths.
With BellXcel, I learned about the power of growth mindset, and how it is inextricably tied to academic achievement.
