Greenville County, South Carolina
With more than half a million residents, and surrounded by the beautiful rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville County, South Carolina is the most populated county in the state. While some segments are thriving, many middle school students in the White Horse community are already at risk of not graduating high school, and face other steep challenges such as poverty and hunger.
The United Way of Greenville County and Greenville County Schools, recognizing that schools and teachers simply cannot do it alone, are harnessing the power of partnerships through the OnTrack Greenville initiative. Establishing an Early Warning Response System to identify students most at-risk, and forging relationships with local school districts, and education partners, including BellXcel, OnTrack Greenville has created an ecosystem of support for highest-need students.
Last summer, over 250 scholars participated in BellXcel Summer at three sites. They gained an average of 2 months in reading and 2 ½ months in math, reversing summer slide. Scholars were immersed in holistic learning experiences including academics, enrichment, social emotional learning, field trips, and community engagement. STEM, dance, sports, computer coding, and healthy living were also intertwined in this 6-week program.
- 92 percent of teachers said scholars exhibited growth mindset gained confidence
- Scholars gained 2 months reading skills and 2.5 months math skills
- 82 percent of scholars demonstrated increased motivation to succeed in school
- 96 percent of teachers said BellXcel developed their professional skills
- 89 percent of parents became more involved in their child's education
BellXcel Summer transforms lives in 6 weeks, and it lasts a lifetime.
