BELL and Spartanburg District 7 Partner to Deliver Summer Learning Experience to Students

BOSTON - April 3, 2012- BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) announced a partnership today with Spartanburg School District 7 in South Carolina to offer its evidence-based summer learning program to support 400 underserved students in grades K-8 across the district. Working together, the nonprofit organization and school district will deliver a summer learning model that includes 6.5 hours of literacy and math instruction and enrichment, five days per week, for five weeks - doubling the number of hours of learning for students at risk of falling behind.

Spartanburg School District 7 Deputy Superintendent Terry Pruitt commented, "We are excited about our partnership with BELL to provide a comprehensive summer program for our students. The model is researched-based and is recognized nationally for getting positive results. The academic focus on literacy and math coupled with field experiences and a strong leadership development program will have a positive impact on our students."

BELL and the district will share the program expense, with BELL bringing philanthropic funding from the Social Innovation Fund, Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, and Wallace Foundation, and others to support program activities, technology-based curricula, teacher training, parent outreach, evaluation, and other BELL Summer activities. This partnership will enable BELL and the school district to create and support jobs for local teachers and aspiring educators at a time when there are few by hiring them to teach the program. It will also meet additional needs of families by delivering free nutritious breakfast and lunch for youth and engaging students in physical fitness, field trips, and community service.

"BELL is excited to be working in partnership with the Spartanburg School District 7 to infuse instructional technology into a highly interactive summer learning experience for students," explains BELL's CEO, Tiffany Gueye, Ph.D. "This is BELL's first partnership in the state of South Carolina, and we couldn't be more honored and excited to be working with Spartanburg School District 7."
