BELL to deliver summer learning experiences for 9,000 scholars in 8 states

BOSTON - June 21, 2012- BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) announced plans to serve 9,000 students in grades K-8 in its summer learning program, BELL Summer. The program will operate in 65 public schools across Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Detroit, Newark, New York City, San Jose, San Rafael, Spartanburg, Springfield, and Winston-Salem.

"There is a tremendous amount of excitement building around summer learning," explains BELL CEO Tiffany Gueye, Ph.D. "More and more people are recognizing that without summer learning, struggling students have a much tougher time catching up and succeeding in school. BELL is proud to partner with parents, teachers, principals, superintendents, donors, and community organizations across 11 cities to deliver the high-quality summer learning experiences that children need and deserve."

The BELL Summer program is a comprehensive summer learning experience that blends academic instruction with hands-on enrichment courses and community engagement. The full-day program expands learning time by 160 - 240 hours. BELL works with schools and districts to hire high-performing certified teachers to lead academic activities, and enrichment instructors and teachers assistants from the school community. The program model has been independently proven to boost student achievement and parent engagement.

This summer marks the first time that BELL delivers its summer learning program for students in San Jose, San Rafael, Spartanburg, and Winston-Salem. In each city, BELL is partnering with public schools and school districts to deliver its summer learning program model in place of traditional summer school, resulting in more hours of learning for students who are performing below grade level. New partnerships in Charlotte with Project L.I.F.T., in Detroit with the Education Achievement Authority, and in New York City with the city's Summer Quest initiative are opening up new pathways for BELL to grow and sustain its summer learning programs. In addition, BELL continues to collaborate with schools and districts in Baltimore, Boston, Newark, and Springfield to sustain its impact in there.

"BELL is able to serve 9,000 scholars and families and partner with schools and school districts because of the generous support of hundreds of donors large and small. The Social Innovation Fund, the Wallace Foundation, the Walmart Foundation, the New York Life Foundation, Target, and many others are playing an important role in building BELL's capacity and supporting a share of program costs. Without their generosity, BELL and its school and district partners could not deliver such great learning experiences for so many scholars."
