BELL Receives Grant from AmeriCorps to Strengthen Summer and After School Programs

BOSTON, MA - Aug. 9, 2012 - BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), an award-winning provider of summer and after school learning solutions, announced today it received a grant from AmeriCorps to place 180 members in its programs in Massachusetts, Michigan, and New York for each of the next three years, with a first year investment of $380,000.

AmeriCorps members will enable BELL to expand its tutoring and enrichment programs in these states to reach more students (whom BELL refers to as "scholars"); deepen parent and community engagement; and replicate its alumni engagement program in Michigan and New York.

"Thanks to AmeriCorps' generous gift, we can greatly expand the scope of our summer and after school learning programs in these states," said BELL CEO Tiffany Cooper Gueye. "Most importantly, we will be able to increase efforts to engage parents, support alumni after they graduate from our programs, and collaborate with community-based organizations in new and exciting ways to build stronger ties within our schools and communities. We believe that rolling out this new AmeriCorps initiative will ultimately result in greater outcomes for the scholars we serve."

Each year AmeriCorps supports the engagement of nearly 75,000 Americans in service to meet critical needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security and other areas. Since 1994, nearly 500,000 AmeriCorps members have served with thousands of nonprofit organizations, public agencies and faith-based organizations nationwide. Members tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, clean parks and streams and recruit, train and manage community volunteers.

AmeriCorps members will begin serving in the BELL After School program this fall, and in the 2012 BELL Summer program.
