BELL Returns to Detroit Public Schools with Its After School Program

DETROIT, MI - BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), a leader in summer and after-school learning programs, announced its return to the Detroit Public School system, Michigan's largest school district. BELL is bringing its demonstrated, evidence-based after school program (BELL After School) to approximately 2,800 children - whom BELL recognizes as scholars - in grades K-8 in 14 schools, with a focus on improving reading and math skills.

"We're excited that we are able to continue our partnership with BELL," said Detroit Public Schools Chief of Teaching and Learning Sherry Ulery. "This collaboration has been very successful in the past in helping Detroit scholars who need the additional academic support the most. We look forward to the results and transformation BELL After School will bring to our scholars."

This past summer, BELL worked with over 4,000 scholars with its summer learning program (BELL Summer), a six-week program with an academic and enrichment learning approach. BELL Summer was part of Detroit Public Schools' Summer Academy, which served nearly 39,000 students. After completing BELL Summer, scholars gained an average of five months of grade-equivalent reading and math skills, according to high-quality standardized diagnostic tests (Stanford Diagnostic Tests). BELL also seeks to transform children's attitudes towards learning in its programs. At the end of BELL Summer, 81 percent of scholars felt confident in their academic skills and 80 percent said they planned to enroll in college.
