Dorchester-based BELL, or Building Educated Leaders for Life, received a $1.1 million grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Trust to further its work in New York City.

The organization, which provides summer and after school learning programs, works with about 1,000 children throughout New York City public schools during the summer. The Helmsley Trust grant will allow BELL to serve 1,500 more students in K-8 in the South Bronx.
