The YMCA of Metropolitan Denver received a 3-year, $150,000 grant from YMCA of the USA to serve 100-120 1st-5th grade scholars at Wyatt Academy in north Denver. Some of that funding is being used this summer for Wyatt's Power Scholars Academy that is running now through July 25th.

"We are excited to get this program started for the students at Wyatt ," says Jen Martin, program director at the YMCA of Metropolitan Denver's Power Scholars Academy at Wyatt Academy. "This signature program is designed to address summer learning loss for low-income children living in urban communities and thereby enhance overall youth development, academic performance, and graduation rates."

The Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL) model is a free six-week summer learning experience operating Monday through Friday for eight hours each day from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. All scholars receive 120 minutes of literacy and math and then 120 minutes of enrichment. This includes: life and leadership development, science, technology, engineering, and health and fitness. The model also includes mentor days and field trips throughout the 6-week program.

According to BELL, results from last year's pilot program showed it boosted students' reading and math skills and increased their self-confidence. Their summer learning success prepared scholars to learn and achieve in the next school year. Denver is offering the program for the first time this summer and is one of eight locations nationwide selected as a pilot.
