Jewelry making, film appreciation, hiking, slacklining, graphic-novel design, coding, dodgeball - the electives list for Aim High reads like a cool summer camp, but this program is right in the students' own East Oakland backyard.

While middle-class kids often spend summers at exotic camps in even more exotic locations, Aim High at Lighthouse Community Charter School is among just a handful of summer programs dedicated to providing disadvantaged children with rigorous academics, embedded into the fun and camaraderie of camp - for free.
