New York Life Foundation Grants $1,000,000

NEW YORK, NY - The New York Life Foundation announced today a four-year, $1,000,000 grant to BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) to support the organization's core literacy and math programming for elementary and middle school children (grades K-8). The funding will help maintain program quality, enhance enrichment activities and strengthen training for staff, thus improving the education of tens of thousands of students from underperforming schools.

"The New York Life Foundation is pleased to become a national partner and help to increase the number of children who will now be able to participate in BELL's highly respected after-school and summer programming," said Chris Park, president, New York Life Foundation. "BELL's focus on narrowing the achievement gap for children from under-resourced, urban communities aligns with the Foundation's focus on supporting quality educational enhancement programs for disadvantaged youth."

"In the last three years, the New York Life Foundation has supported the expansion of the BELL Summer program in New York City, and we are thrilled that their new commitment will extend our partnership on a national scope," said Dr. Tiffany C. Gueye, chief executive officer, BELL. "The New York Life Foundation's investment in summer and after school learning will enable BELL to increase the academic and social achievements of more than 30,000 students in six states over the next three years, narrow the achievement gap, and advance the next generation of education reform efforts targeted at turning around low-performing schools."

"The New York Life Foundation's investment in BELL validates the role of corporate giving in bringing to scale some of the most innovative, successful, and growth-ready organizations in the nonprofit sector," said Laurene Sperling, chair, BELL Board of Directors. "We are proud to be supported by such a leader in the funding community."

The first year of the grant supports summer and after school programming for 3,000 scholars in 27 public schools in New York City. In the subsequent years, the Foundation's funding will support summer and after-school programming in six states - Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, and North Carolina - and provide for expansion to one additional location to be named at a later date. By 2013, 10,000 scholars per year in 75 schools will benefit.
